Cuddles: Dwarf With a Mission
Dec 17th, 2010 at 10:33am

On December 3rd, Cuddles was appointed as Seofon's next guildleader.  Bruenorg, diverted from gaming by the birth of his son, will continue as Administrative Officer. Cuddles spoke to me about Everquest and the future of the guild:

"Something I consider important is maintaining the friendly family atmosphere that has been the identity of this guild for so long.

"I’d also like to continue raiding and moving forward as a guild, remaining a contender on the server. . .

“The biggest challenge that I see facing Seofon is maintaining raiding numbers. The group game seems healthy enough and every night I log in, there are always people out grouping. . ."

Cuddles has been playing Everquest since '99.  He began grouping with his twin brother (Izualde) and his cousin on Rallos Zek.  His first toon was a halfling warrior, Shiznon, followed by a high elf enchanter, Taelmec.

"The enchanter was a fun class.  I could solo; I was very popular for groups. However playing on a PVP server, I wore only no drop gear which was not wide spread back then, and usually only wore three or four items total.

I thought PVP was extremely fun. I started my online gaming with first person shooters and fighting other people was something I was already familiar with. Class balance was an issue, and getting anything done was extremely difficult and time consuming having to dodge all other players for fear of being killed.”

Eventually Cuddles followed a friend to Xev, where he started a new main, the shaman Reddhawk.

“My first guild I joined was Lions of the Heart. The guild leader had approached me in the East Commonlands tunnel while I was looking to buy gear and invited me. Being in a guild was fun, however Aanolas (then Azzuin) had joined a different guild. Most all of the people in Lions of the Heart were in the 30s and could not group with me . . .

Azzuin and I eventually coaxed another friend into playing EverQuest (Jobue), and we joined a guild called Omerta. That was my first introduction to raiding: Halls of Testing, West Temple of Veeshan, Kael Ramp and Arena, etc.”

When Omerta disbanded, Cuddle's passed through the gates of more ambitious raid guilds: Divine Prophecy, Odysseys, Blood Cult and Old Continent.

“[Blood Cult] raided four times a week and used a DKP system. I was extremely proud to be a part of that guild, accomplishing impressive raid kills with very low numbers compared to the other competing guilds at the time. Normal raid turn-out was 45. Unfortunately, the guild collapsed and we ended up being absorbed by another competing guild called Old Continent.”

Then real life interrupted the story in Norrath.  Cuddles enlisted in the Army and went /AFK from Everquest for six months.  By the time he returned in late 2005, Xev server had merged into Druzzil Ro, and Old Continent was absorbed by the end game raid guild Europa.

“I did not like constantly getting tugged around, being absorbed by different guilds. I wanted a place to call home. Jobue told me I should join his guild; they were significantly further behind on raids and progression than what I was used to, but I had seen Seofon around ever since I could remember. They seemed like a stable guild, so I applied to Seofon.”

Seofon was able to accommodate the soldier's unpredictable schedules.

I loved helping on raids, but not being required to do so . . .  It has more of a sense of belonging, more of a feel of home. . . Downing big bad bosses while still being family oriented is also an excellent quality.  Seofon has done well over the years to straddle that line between raiding guild and family guild . . .

I think what sticks out the most was when Seofon was the second guild on the server to defeat Overlord Mata Muram, despite being seventh in progression rankings. Though I was not a part of the effort, being stationed in Iraq, I did read about it and all the waves it created around the server.”

"When I was wounded in Iraq I received seven cards and letters from different Seofon members while I was recovering in the hospital, including the guild leader at the time, Frackus. I'll never forget that."

Now, by 2010, Cuddles is out of the Army and back in the States, attending college full time.  In Norrath, he retired Reddhawk and started the berserker Cuddles Dwarvenprincess.  For the last few years, Cuddles has been a Seofon raid leader and the organizer of Team Ramrod, DPS specialists.

"I felt the guild has given so much to me and I had not given nearly enough in return. That is the reason why I volunteered to be an Officer in the first place, and is why I felt I should step up to be Guild Leader as well.

Cuddles finds its definitely easier to play Everquest on campus then in a tent.

“Everyone in this guild has obligations outside of this game, which is why this guild is so special. We have mixes of avid raiders and gamers, all the way to very casual people who log in when real life gives them a break, and no one is held higher or lower for their playtime . . .”

OC came to Druzzil in the first merger we went through. (forget which server it was).  Hmmm or did they just do a mass guild transfer from another server?  I almost seem to remember the mass guild transfer creating drama on dro.com, so that may have been it.  In any case, they did originally come from a different server.
